To qualify, you must be at least 50 years of age — this is a hard requirement with no exceptions. Beyond age, the main qualifying factor is your ability to meet the financial requirements, which in practice almost always means being able to deposit 800,000 Thai Baht into a Thai bank account. If you cannot or do not want to place that deposit, the visa pathway becomes structurally difficult to complete, and a different visa type (most often the Non-Immigrant 'OA' Retirement Visa) is usually the more appropriate route. The visa is available to foreign nationals from most countries, though the exact documentation requirements and financial thresholds can vary depending on which Thai Embassy or Consulate you start the process through.

For Stage 2 (the 12-month extension, completed inside Thailand through Thai Immigration), the requirement is a flat 800,000 Thai Baht deposited into a Thai bank account, regardless of your nationality or which Embassy you applied through. There is no local-currency equivalent at this stage; Immigration works in Thai Baht.

Note: The figures above reflect real-world working thresholds, not simply what appears on Embassy websites. Some Embassies — Canada being a clear example — still publish figures that are visibly too low relative to current exchange rates. Thailand Blueprint does not rely on those outdated numbers.

Bank Deposit Method — how it works at each stage

For Stage 1, it is not enough to simply have the required amount sitting in your account on the day you apply. Thai Embassies have meaningfully tightened their enforcement here: you should demonstrate that the required minimum (specific to the Thai Embassy or Consulate you are applying through) was present as a consistent ending cash balance across each of the three months leading up to your application. Sudden large deposits made just before applying are increasingly scrutinized and often rejected.

Pension Income Method — valid for Stage 1, but almost certainly not for Stage 2

For Stage 1, pension income is a legitimate and commonly used qualifying method. You will need a Pension Award Letter or equivalent certificate, along with three months of bank statements showing the pension being deposited into your personal account. Many applicants — particularly those drawing Social Security, CPP, a UK State Pension, or equivalent government pensions — qualify this way for the initial 90-day visa without any issue.

However, this is the critical point: applicants who use pension income for Stage 1 will almost certainly not be able to use it for Stage 2. Thai Immigration requires an official income verification letter from your country's Embassy in Bangkok confirming your pension amount — and most Western Embassies (including the US, Canada, UK, and Australia) stopped issuing those letters years ago. Without that letter, the pension income method becomes procedurally blocked at the extension stage. The only alternative is to show 12 consecutive months of 65,000 THB deposits into a Thai bank account, which is simply not possible for someone who has just arrived and is opening a Thai bank account for the first time. The practical implication: if you are pursuing the Non-Immigrant 'O' Retirement Visa, you should plan to deposit 800,000 Thai Baht into a Thai bank account for the 12-month extension — even if you used pension income to qualify for Stage 1.

What if I rely on pension income and don't want to place a 800,000 THB deposit in a Thai Bank as part of Stage 2, which is the 12-month extension process?

That is a completely valid position, and the answer is that the Non-Immigrant 'OA' Retirement Visa may be the better fit for you. Because the OA is issued entirely through the Thai Embassy system outside of Thailand, pension income can be used to qualify for the full 12-month visa at that stage — no in-country extension or deposit required. But in practice, for most first-time applicants, no.

This is one of the most important nuances of the Non-Immigrant 'O' Retirement Visa, and it is worth understanding clearly.

For Stage 1 (the initial 90-day visa from the Embassy or Consulate), pension income is acceptable as long as you can provide a Pension Award Letter or equivalent certificate and show three months of bank statements reflecting the pension being paid into your personal account. When you apply for the 90-Day 'O' Retirement Visa (Stage 1) through the Thai Embassy / Consulate system, you are now generally expected to provide three months of bank statements, each showing the required minimum balance (specific to that Thai Embassy or Consulate) as an ending balance for that month. The question that trips people up is this: can the current, not-yet-finished month count as one of your three qualifying months?

The answer is that it depends entirely on what documentation your bank can produce.

If you want to count the current month, you must be able to generate a PDF bank statement covering from the start of that month up to the date of your application. Many banks allow this through their mobile app or online banking platform, where you can export a custom date-range statement at any time. If your bank offers this, you are in good shape.

But not all banks work this way. Some banks only produce official PDF statements once per month — typically on the last day of the month — and cannot generate a mid-month statement on demand. If your bank falls into that category, the current month simply cannot count, because you have no document to prove your balance up to today.

Here is a concrete example to make this tangible:

Say you want to submit your Embassy application on June 14th, and your bank only releases official PDF statements at the end of each month. You cannot produce a June statement as that will not exist until June 30th. So, June is off the table as a qualifying month. Your three months must instead be March, April, and May — meaning your required balance needed to be in place and consistently maintained all the way back in March. If it was not, you either need to wait until the June statement is available (which means applying no earlier than June 30th or whenever your bank releases it), or push the funds into the account earlier and wait until you have three complete qualifying monthly statements lined up.

This is more and more becoming a hard constraint and failing to account for it can result in delays, rejected documentation, or a forced reschedule — all of which are entirely avoidable with a little planning upfront. The first thing to do is simply call or check your bank's online platform and confirm: can I generate a custom date-range PDF statement, or do you only issue statements at the end of each month?

One more thing worth covering here: the type of account your funds are held in matters just as much as the balance itself. The money must be in a standard personal checking or cash-equivalent account — the kind you use for everyday spending, where the funds are fully liquid and immediately accessible. Funds sitting in brokerage accounts, retirement accounts (such as an IRA, 401(k), RRSP, TFSA, SIPP, or Superannuation), pension accounts, investment portfolios, crypto wallets, or any locked or fixed-term account do not qualify, regardless of the balance. A simple practical test: if you cannot walk up to an ATM today and withdraw that money with a debit card, it does not count for this application.

This can be a recent utility bill, a driver's license or government-issued ID with an address, or in some cases a selfie holding your passport showing your most recent entry stamp. The proof of location also determines which specific Thai Embassy or Consulate you are eligible to apply through, so this detail matters.

Once you arrive in Thailand on your 90-day Non-Immigrant 'O' Visa, you are provided a stay permit that reflects 90 days of Non-Immigrant visa status. Opening a Thai bank account generally requires long-term visa status. But converting to a Non-Immigrant 'O' Retirement Visa requires a Thai bank account. Each one requires the other, which means you cannot easily start the process from Tourist Visa status or Visa Exemption standing.

The standard route in this situation is to depart Thailand to a nearby country — Vietnam is a common choice — apply for the initial 90-day Non-Immigrant 'O' Visa at a Thai Embassy or Consulate there, and then re-enter Thailand on that visa. Once you are back in Thailand with proper Non-Immigrant status, the path forward is exactly the same as it is for everyone else — Thailand Blueprint opens your Thai bank account, guides you through depositing the required funds, and completes your 12-month extension and Multiple Entry Re-Entry Permit during your first week back on the ground.

It is not the most convenient route if you are already settled in Thailand, but it is the clean and reliable one — and for most people without a Thai bank account already in place, it is the only structurally sound option.

Both visas are designed for retirees aged 50 and above, but they work quite differently.

In practice: applicants who are comfortable with the bank deposit and want to avoid health insurance requirements typically prefer the Non-O. Applicants who rely on pension income, want a 12-month visa issued upfront, and are comfortable meeting the health insurance requirement typically find the OA more suitable. Both are equally valid pathways — the right choice depends on your personal situation.

This is a detail that surprises many people and is important to understand from the outset. When Thai Immigration grants you a 12-month extension of stay, that extension is tied to you remaining inside Thailand. If you leave the country without a re-entry permit in your passport, your extension is automatically cancelled the moment you exit — even if only for a brief trip abroad.

A Multiple Entry Re-Entry Permit solves this problem as it allows you to leave and re-enter Thailand as many times as you like over the course of your 12-month extension validity period, without affecting your visa status in any way. As long as you are living in Thailand on a Non-Immigrant 'O' Retirement Visa, you are required to confirm your residential address with Thai Immigration every 90 days. This is called 90-day reporting, and it is a standing compliance obligation — not a one-time formality.

The rule that most people do not initially realise is this: every time you re-enter Thailand — whether it is your very first arrival or a return from a trip abroad — your first 90-day report following that entry must be completed in person at a Thai Immigration office. After that first in-person report for any given entry, all subsequent reports during that stay can be submitted online through the Immigration Bureau's TM.47 portal. Think of it as a reset: every new entry into Thailand starts the in-person requirement again, just once, before online reporting resumes.

A couple of examples make this much easier to follow.

Example A — Your first year, no travel abroad. You arrive in Thailand in January and complete your 12-month extension. Your next report, due 90 days later, can be submitted entirely online. From that point forward, as long as you remain in Thailand continuously, every subsequent report is online.

Example B — You take a trip abroad mid-year. Say you have been in Thailand since January, handled your first in-person report, and have been filing online since then. In June, you fly to Bali for two weeks and return to Thailand on June 20th. That re-entry stamp on June 20th resets your 90-day clock entirely — your next report is now due 90 days from June 20th, which is September 18th. But here is the key detail: because this is a fresh entry into Thailand, that September 18th report must be done in person. After you complete it in person, the one following it — due 90 days later in December — goes back to being online.

Example C — Frequent travel. If you are someone who travels in and out of Thailand regularly, it is entirely possible that you never actually file an online report at all, because each return to Thailand triggers a new in-person requirement before online filing can resume. If your trips are frequent enough that your 90-day clock keeps resetting before you ever reach the online filing stage, every report you file will be in person. This is not a problem — it just means you need to be aware of it and plan your Immigration visits accordingly rather than assuming you can always file from your laptop.

Two other details worth knowing: reports are calculated on exactly 90 calendar days — not "three months," which means the due date shifts slightly depending on the time of year. And you are permitted to submit your report up to 15 days before the due date, which gives you a useful window to plan around travel or busy periods.

If your spouse is 50 or older, there is generally no dependent pathway available to them under this visa program. Thai Embassies / Consulates / Immigration treats each applicant as a fully independent individual regardless of marital status, so your spouse must apply for their own Non-Immigrant 'O' Retirement Visa and meet all of the financial requirements in their own right. There are no shared thresholds, no couple discounts, and no exceptions to this — the system simply does not recognise the marital relationship as a qualifying factor for a shared visa at this age bracket.

If your spouse is under 50, a dependent visa — technically called a Non-Immigrant 'O' Dependent Visa — is theoretically available, and would allow your spouse to be tied to your visa without needing to meet separate financial requirements, provided you can show proof of marriage. However, this is where significant nuance comes in, and it is important to understand it clearly rather than assume this is a straightforward option.

The Non-Immigrant 'O' Dependent Visa was originally designed for the spouses and dependents of foreign nationals working or studying in Thailand — think of a spouse accompanying a corporate executive holding a business visa and work permit. It was not specifically built around the retirement visa context. Because of this, many Thai Embassies and Consulates are reluctant to issue a Non-O Dependent Visa when the primary holder's basis is a retirement visa rather than a work or study visa. Where Embassies tend to be more accommodating with 'O' dependent visas is when the primary holder holds a Non-Immigrant 'OA' Retirement Visa — but even that is not consistent across all Embassy / Consulate systems. For Non-O retirement visa holders specifically, this is very much a case-by-case situation that varies by Embassy, by Consulate, and sometimes by the individual officer handling the application.

The cleaner and far more reliable route for bringing a spouse to Thailand — particularly if that spouse is under 50 and dependent inclusion matters to you — is the LTR (Long-Term Resident) Visa program, which has a clearly structured and well-supported dependent pathway built directly into it. If keeping your spouse on a stable, straightforward visa alongside yours is a priority, it is genuinely worth exploring whether the LTR program is a better structural fit for your situation overall.

For dependents other than a spouse — such as children — different visa categories may apply depending on their ages and circumstances, and the right pathway varies considerably from case to case.
