The DTV is a long-stay visa designed for digital nomads, freelancers, remote workers, and people engaging in certified Thai cultural or wellness activities. It allows you to live in Thailand for up to 5 years.

Each entry is valid for 180 days, which you can extend once inside Thailand for another 180 days, giving you up to 360 days per stay. Multiple entries are permitted during the 5-year validity.

You must be 20 years or older at the time of application and meet one of two categories:

1. Workation: Remote employees, freelancers, or online business owners working for employers/clients outside Thailand. Requires proof of income or client work.
2. Soft Power: Foreigners enrolled in a certified cultural, educational, or wellness activity in Thailand. Requires a formal enrolment or appointment letter from a recognized institution. Examples include:

• Muay Thai Training – FitFac Muay Thai
• Thai Cooking Courses – Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy
• Dental/Wellness – Smile Center Dental Clinic

Other options include Thai language schools, meditation centers, and hospitals certified to provide enrolment confirmation letters.

Foreigners enrolled in a certified cultural, educational, or wellness activity in Thailand. Requires a formal enrolment or appointment letter from a recognized institution. Examples include:

• Muay Thai Training – FitFac Muay Thai
• Thai Cooking Courses – Bangkok Thai Cooking Academy
• Dental/Wellness – Smile Center Dental Clinic

Other options include Thai language schools, meditation centers, and hospitals certified to provide enrolment confirmation letters.

You must apply from outside Thailand through your local Thai Embassy or Consulate. The process is fully online via the e-Visa system. Once approved, you’ll receive a digital visa (PDF) by email.

You then present this at Thai Immigration upon entry, where the visa will be stamped into your passport.

Standard timing is 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the embassy/consulate and how quickly you provide documents.

You must show at least 500,000 THB (or foreign equivalent) in a standard bank account (not investment account or crypto account) in your name. The funds need to be in your actual bank account. Thai Embassy officials will likely reject your application if the funds are in the wrong type of account.

• Employment contract or employment certificate or employment letter showcasing clear permission and ability to work remotely for said employer from Thailand OR:
• If you are a freelancer, instead of showing the above, you can show a professional portfolio showcasing digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer status
• Proof of location document that shows your location and your name. This could be a Drivers License, a Utility Bill, or any form of Government issued ID that has your full name and address 
• Scan of 4CM x 6CM Professional Headshot with solid white background

2) Soft Power Category: 

• Proof of 500,000 Thai Baht (or equivalent) in standard bank account (not investment account, not savings account, not crypto) 
• Proof of location document that shows your location and your name. This could be a Drivers License, a Utility Bill, or any form of Government issued ID that has your full name and address 
• Scan of 4CM x 6CM Professional Headshot with solid white background
• Proof of confirmation to attend the activity eligible under the Thai Soft Power Category (such as a Confirmation letter from a Certified Muay Thai School or an Appointment Letter from a Thai Hospital)

Applications are typically denied for the following reasons:

• Under 20 years old

• Personal Bank account funds showing less than the 500,000 THB equivalent

• Proof of funds in non-standard accounts (crypto, fixed deposits, brokerage)

• Proof of funds in accounts not clearly in your personal name (e.g., LLC or small business accounts)

• No proof of enrolment for Soft Power applicants

• Attempting to work for Thai companies or clients based in Thailand

No. You cannot work with Thai partners, for Thai companies, or in industries that tie you into the Thai economy.

For example:

• Teaching English at a Thai school
• Freelance design for Thai businesses
• Bar/restaurant work
• Starting a Thai Company

That said, you can work remotely for non-Thai employers or clients, with income paid from outside Thailand.

Some examples of this type of work include: 

• Software developer working for a U.S-based company
• Freelance graphic designer working with European clients
• SDR selling SAAS products to Canadian companies 

It is extremely difficult, essentially impossible, to open a bank account on a DTV. Banks classify the DTV as a long-term tourist visa rather than a Non-Immigrant visa, and most branches will not allow account openings under this category.

Yes. Your spouse and children under 20 can be included once your own DTV is approved. If your spouse doesn’t have their own account with the 500,000 THB requirement, they can still qualify through a Letter of Sponsorship and your supporting bank statement. Each dependent requires a separate application and government fee, but they are tied to your visa status. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has set the application fee at 10,000 Thai Baht, but this is not applied universally. The actual fee depends on the Thai Embassy or Consulate where you apply.

• Soft Power category: You may be asked to show that you still maintain at least 500,000 THB in a personal bank account and that you remain actively enrolled in your certified cultural or wellness activity in Thailand.

Yes. But the DTV cannot be converted inside Thailand. To switch to another visa type, you must cancel the DTV, apply for a 7-day extension, leave Thailand, and apply for the new visa abroad through the Consulate system.

Yes. Every 90 days you must file a 90-day report (TM.47 Form) with Thai Immigration.

Your first 90-day report must be done in person at a Thai Immigration Office. After that, all subsequent 90-day reports can be submitted online using the Immigration Bureau’s TM.47 portal.

However, one thing worth noting is that if you leave and re-enter Thailand within a given 90-day period between reports, that exit and re-entry automatically resets the 90-day clock. In that case, you do not need to file a report as your most recent passport entry stamp acts as the new start date.

For Example: If you last did your 90-day report on January 1st, your next report would normally be due on April 1st. But if you take a trip to Singapore on March 15th and return on March 20th, you no longer need to file on April 1st. Instead, your next 90-day report is due on June 18th, exactly 90 days after your March 20th re-entry stamp.

Note that reports are always counted as exactly 90 days — not “3 months.” In a leap year, February counts as 29 days, so the next due date is always 90 calendar days after the last report or re-entry stamp.
