Before you start

Why do Destination Thailand Visa applications break down?

You can secure this visa yourself, and some people do. Six things reliably trip people up: embassy mismatches, the wrong applicant lens, inconsistent professional materials, soft power enrolment mistakes, a five-year visa is not a five-year stay, and joint accounts double the threshold.

01

Embassy mismatches

Each Thai embassy or consulate applies its own thresholds, currency conversions and proof-of-location rules. Some posts require local residency to apply at all. Applying through the wrong post costs weeks or kills the application.

02

The wrong applicant lens

For those working remotely, it's best to apply as a remote employee, or a remote business owner, or a freelancer. Each sub-track requires meaningfully different substantiation. Mixing elements across tracks creates gaps the embassy reads as inconsistency.

03

Inconsistent professional materials

Embassies cross-check LinkedIn, websites, invoices and bank statements against each other. A dormant business website or an ‘open to work’ LinkedIn is the single most common cause of remote worker rejection.

04

Soft power enrolment mistakes

Not every Thai school, gym or medical centre can issue the registrations and certifications the embassy wants. Short courses frequently get downgraded to a tourist visa or denied outright.

05

A five-year visa is not a five-year stay

The visa is valid five years, but each entry is stamped for up to 180 days. People plan around the visa dates, miss that the stay permit is a separate clock, and overstay.

06

Joint accounts double the threshold

Embassies typically count only half a joint account toward each holder, so a couple qualifying from one joint account usually needs to show twice the balance.

How we work

How does Thailand Blueprint simplify the process?

We build applications against the written and unwritten requirements of Thai Embassies, Consulates, Board of Investment, and Immigration. We then sequence every step in the right order and execute the entire process. Everything is tracked and organized in our secure client portal (opens in a new tab).

Document precision

We check every document against the exact requirements of the specific embassy or consulate processing your case, as each one handles applications differently.

Secure client portal

All documents, communication and e-signatures are managed in our in-house portal. Upload files, track progress and stay updated in one place.

Ongoing support

We remain available for the ongoing maintenance of your DTV, including extending your permission of stay and 90-day reporting as add-on options.

Book your Eligibility Assessment

Step by step

How long does this take, and what do you have to do?

Seven steps, in order, with the elapsed time for each and a plain division of labour. The middle column is everything you personally have to do. Read down it on its own if that is the question you came with.

  1. Step 1: Eligibility assessment

    When
    Before anything is paidfrom engagement
    You
Tell us how you earn, where you are right now, and whether anyone is coming with you.
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Work out which sub-category fits whether that's Workation or Soft Power. We also determine which Thai embassy or consulate you are actually eligible to apply through.
  2. Step 2: Client portal setup

    When
    Day 1from engagement
    You
Upload the documents we request from you based on your specific situation and where you're applying.
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Set you up in the portal and send your pre-service guidebook. Dependants are set up alongside you and move in tandem.
  3. Relocation Roadmap & Bangkok Rental Service

Bolt-on relocation service. You can add it or leave it.

  4. Step 3: Application package preparation

    When
    Before submissionfrom engagement
    You
Fill the gaps we flag. Translated documents have to be notarised, so start those early.
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Package everything in the format embassy officers expect, confirm the right post for your proof of location, and check it against that post's known rejection patterns.
  5. Step 4: Submission and embassy review

    When
5 to 15 business daysfrom embassy submission
    You
Nothing, unless the embassy asks for more. We tell you the moment they do.
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Submit, track it, and handle document and applicant requests on your behalf.
  6. Step 5: Visa issued as an e-Visa

    When
    On approvalfrom embassy submission
    You
Save the PDF and print a copy to keep in your passport.
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Send the e-Visa through the portal and explain what it does and does not give you before you book flights.
  7. VIP Arrival

Bolt-on relocation service. You can add it or leave it.

  8. Step 6: Arrival in Thailand

    When
    Day 0after arrival in Thailand
    You
Show the e-Visa at Immigration. You are stamped in for up to 180 days, not for five years.
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Make sure you know the difference between the visa and your permission of stay before you land, because that is what catches people out.
  9. Step 7: Ongoing support

    When
Across the five yearsafter arrival in Thailand
    You
Maintain your visa in good standing
    Thailand Blueprint Team
Stay available for reporting questions in our secure client portal
  10. Bangkok Orientation Day & Thai Driver’s Licence

Bolt-on relocation service. You can add it or leave it.

Total duration for the Destination Thailand Visa: Start to finish: about 5 to 15 business days at the embassy — then 180 days on each entry, for five years

What else do people ask about this visa?

What exactly is the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?

The Destination Thailand Visa, commonly referred to as the DTV, is a 5-year multiple-entry visa issued through the Thai Embassy and Consulate system outside of Thailand. It was introduced relatively recently and has quickly become one of the most popular long-stay pathways for remote workers, digital nomads, remote freelancers, remote business owners, and individuals pursuing approved Thai cultural activities such as Muay Thai training, Thai culinary courses, and medical treatment.

Read the full answer
Who qualifies for the DTV, and what are the three sub-categories?

The DTV Workation sub-category is for foreign nationals who earn their income from sources outside of Thailand through legitimate remote work or remote business activity. It is split into two further sub-tracks: one for business owners, entrepreneurs, and freelancers (self-employed applicants), and one for employees of foreign companies who have been granted permission to work remotely from Thailand. The requirements differ between the two sub-tracks.

What is the difference between the DTV Visa itself and the 180-day Stay Permit?

This is the single most misunderstood aspect of the DTV, and it is worth being precise about because the entire long-term experience of holding this visa hinges on the distinction.

Read the full answer
What are the financial requirements, and why do they vary by Embassy?

The headline financial requirement for the DTV is 500,000 Thai Baht as a minimum ending bank account balance, demonstrated across each of the three most recent monthly bank statements at the time of application. This applies to the Workation, Soft Power, and Dependant sub-categories, though the Dependant sub-category has an alternative Sponsorship Method that is addressed in its own right further below.

How does the joint account vs single account distinction work?

Whether the applicant uses a single-name account or a joint account changes the required balance significantly, and this is one of the most common sources of confusion.
