Answers · Non-OA Retirement Visa
How does the OA Visa compare to the Non-Immigrant ‘O’ Retirement Visa?
Both visas are designed for retirees aged 50 and above and both provide long-term stay in Thailand, but they work quite differently in practice. The right choice depends heavily on your personal financial situation and how you feel about the additional documentation requirements the OA carries.
The Non-Immigrant ‘O’ Retirement Visa does not require health insurance, a medical certificate, or a police clearance certificate. It involves a two-stage application process: an initial 90-day visa from the Embassy followed by a 12-month extension completed inside Thailand, which requires opening a Thai bank account and depositing 800,000 Thai Baht. Pension income can be used for Stage 1, but practically cannot be used reliably for Stage 2 for most first-time applicants due to Embassy income verification letters no longer being issued by most Western Embassies.
The Non-Immigrant ‘OA’ Retirement Visa on the other hand requires health insurance covering at least 3,000,000 Thai Baht of in-patient care, a medical certificate, and a police clearance certificate. In return, it is a single-stage process with up to 12 months of permitted stay granted on arrival with no secondary extension required. Critically, pension income can be used reliably to qualify for the full 12-month OA without ever needing to deposit funds into a Thai bank account, making this the stronger structural fit for pension-reliant applicants who want to avoid the 800,000 THB deposit requirement entirely.
The core trade-off is straightforward: the Non-O is lower barrier in terms of documentation but requires a significant Thai bank deposit. The OA is higher barrier in terms of documentation but is more accessible for pension-reliant retirees and delivers a cleaner, single-stage arrival experience.
